Edge Environment\u2019s monthly \u2018Make More Good\u2019 donation sends $300 to a worthy cause nominated by a staff member. In September, Edge\u2019s Sustainability Consultant James Thomas, chose the Rainforest Alliance<\/a>\u00a0to be the recipient.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Rainforest Alliance<\/a> is a network of farmers, foresters, communities, scientists, governments, environmentalists and businesses dedicated to conserving biodiversity and ensuring sustainable livelihoods. They work to rejuvenate agricultural landscapes, conserve forests, foster sustainable livelihoods and drive supply chain innovation. The Rainforest Alliance\u2019s vision is to develop a global system where people and nature thrive in harmony.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>As the world population is expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050, the environmental impacts of increased food production must be carefully managed to avoid catastrophic consequences. Food production accounts for up to 80% of tropical deforestation as forests and jungles are cleared to create more space for crop production and animal grazing. The Rainforest Alliance works with farmers on the front lines of the global movement to build food security through sustainable agriculture by training farmers in some of the world\u2019s most vulnerable landscapes to farm in a way that boosts crop yields, conserves forests, protects streams and rivers and nurtures soil health.<\/p>\n

Many cultures rely on forests for their livelihood, shelter, water and medicine and the deforestation attributed to increased food production harms these critically important ecosystems and endangers the cultural traditions of communities that live near forests. Our current food system is not sustainable and in order to increase production without significant environmental consequence we must support organisations like The Rainforest Alliance to educate food producers on how to operate in a more sustainable manner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
