{"id":7732,"date":"2017-06-02T09:22:32","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T23:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/edgeenvironment.com\/?p=7732"},"modified":"2019-09-27T13:58:22","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T03:58:22","slug":"sustainable-procurement-guidance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edgeenvironment.com\/us\/2017\/06\/02\/sustainable-procurement-guidance\/","title":{"rendered":"Why the new Sustainable Procurement Guidance matters now more than ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7733 size-full\" title=\"Sustainable Procurement Guidance\" src=\"http:\/\/edgeenvironment.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Sustainable-Procurement-Guide.jpg\" alt=\"Sustainable Procurement Guidance\" width=\"5774\" height=\"2918\" \/><\/strong><em><strong>For the increasing number of companies striving for sustainable operations, the new ISO 20400 \u2013 Sustainable Procurement Guidance is the latest \u2018how-to\u2019 for assessing and improving supply chains across all industries.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The International Organization for Standardization\u2019s new <em>ISO 20400 \u2013 Sustainable Procurement Guidance <\/em>couldn\u2019t be timelier. About 80% of a company\u2019s environmental impacts come from its supply chain rather than internal operations, so evaluating procurement processes is key to fine-tuning sustainability achievements and goals.<\/p>\n<p>Released in April, <em>ISO 20400 <\/em>is the first internationally agreed upon standard for incorporating sustainability into the procurement process. Most importantly, it highlights the pivotal role a supply chain plays between managing sustainability risks and capitalising on sustainability opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>However, some might argue that sustainability should always have been part of good procurement strategy, governance and process. Sustainability risks (and opportunities) should already be integrated in good risk-management processes. So, what does <em>ISO 20400<\/em> provide us that we didn\u2019t already know?<\/p>\n<p><em>ISO 20400<\/em> creates a set of definitions and strategic frameworks, and describes sustainable procurement processes, in a way that can be consistently applied by all organisations. The value of this consistency is often underestimated \u2013 a common understanding of sustainable procurement means all organisations can be clear on the scope of activities required to improve performance. In other words, all organisations would be working on the same path towards ever-higher levels of sustainability.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Sustainable procurement \u2013 why does it matter now?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If good procurement should have always included sustainability, there is even more imperative to make sure it does so now, because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>increased negative media attention on social and environmental issues means companies are held accountable for their suppliers\u2019 activities, and the excuse of \u2018not knowing\u2019 about your suppliers\u2019 sustainability practices is more likely to be rejected by customers;<\/li>\n<li>some supply chain risks, particularly breaches of labour rights, were previously thought to be more relevant to developing countries, but recent exposures prove this is incorrect. The Australian Government\u2019s inquiry into a Modern Slavery Act (a proposal that could be similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/business-humanrights.org\/en\/uk-modern-slavery-act\">Britain\u2019s Modern Slavery Act<\/a>) provides more evidence that this is an issue within our shores;<\/li>\n<li>new tools and risk assessment methods provide procurement professionals with better oversight of potential sustainability issues, which ensures sustainability can be integrated within existing processes. Examples include:\n<ol>\n<li>Social hotspot database \u2013 an invaluable screening tool for social impacts at the country and sector level.<\/li>\n<li>Environmental life cycle assessment \u2013 scientifically based \u2018materiality\u2019 screening to determine which environmental impacts matter for your organisation and where these impacts sit within your supply chain.<\/li>\n<li>Modern slavery index \u2013 country-level statistics on modern slavery risks. The issue is more widespread than many realise.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>ISO 20400 \u2013 Sustainable Procurement Guidance<\/em> provides the glue between sustainable strategy, risk-management and more \u2018traditional\u2019 procurement.
