Last week, the Green Building Council of Australia and the Property Council of Australia hosted the 11th<\/sup> annual Green Cities Conference at the new International Convention Centre Sydney. The overarching message was that Data and Disruptive Technology is coming, but it\u2019s only disruptive for those who\u00a0don\u2019t see it coming. Some highlights from the conference\u00a0include:<\/p>\n

The future is coming<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Global futurist Chris Riddell, the first ever Chief Digital Officer (CDO) for MARS foods, opened the conference. He focused on future trends and ‘super trends’. In marketing, nowadays, the experience is always promoted ahead of the product. Crowd data is available freely and in abundance. Data is the new oil \u2013 we need to mine it. Data is becoming the new currency.<\/em> Providing services and products that can enrich the user experience by utilising this increasing ocean of data is a key opportunity for innovation.<\/p>\n

Did you know?\u00a0<\/strong>Drivers’ licences are on the decline for young people in Victoria<\/a>,\u00a0because\u00a0who needs to drive when a car will turn up at the push of a button?<\/p>\n

Density done well<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

There was a large panel discussion on density and how to do it correctly in Australia’s evolving\u00a0green cities. Every urban setting\u00a0must be designed for people, with a mix of residential housing\u00a0(including social, affordable and unrestricted), uniformity and variability of building types, access and mobility (mass public transport access), and a mix of people from all backgrounds. The mega trends for urban living are aged care, affordability, wellbeing.<\/p>\n

Did you know?\u00a0<\/strong>Low density housing is affecting cardiovascular disease<\/a>. In\u00a0Tokyo (which is high density), only 5% of the population is obese, while in Sydney it\u2019s 27%.<\/p>\n

City of Vancouver, City of Adelaide and ACT leading the way<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of carbon neutral targets and implementation, renewable energy targets and implementation, electric vehicle charging and climate adaptation plans that will be the backbone of green cities, the City of Vancouver<\/a>, the City of Adelaide<\/a>\u00a0and the ACT government<\/a>\u00a0are leading the way. What about the POSITIVE\u00a0NEWS stories?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Angus Hervey and Tane Hunter of Future Crunch<\/a> took the conference on a journey through some\u00a0amazing scientific stories and successes happening out there that aren\u2019t reported in the mainstream media. With their disruptive optimism, they opened eyes to all the good news stories, leaving attendees\u00a0feeling much more positive about the future (confirmed by the digital, real-time before and after audience polls).<\/p>\n

Like Future Crunch said, \u201cStep out of the mainstream media bubble every now and again\u201d.<\/p>\n

Show me the green money<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sara Neff (Kilroy Realty Corporation), Roxana Isaiu (GRESB) and Andy Cavanagh-Downs (Sydney Renewable Power Company) chaired a session on unlocking\u00a0finance. The overlying message was that capital providers do care about environmental and social issues, and that they are working towards their\u00a0own sustainability targets through GRESB<\/a>\u00a0and other reporting tools (e.g. Dow Jones Sustainability Index<\/a>). There are many new financial models popping up that\u00a0make it easy to get capital and capture returns for\u00a0renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives; for example, the community-owned, volunteer-run, for-profit public company model that Sydney Renewable Power Company used to get a 520kW solar system on the ICC roof<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reconciliation \u2013 More needs to be done to close the gap!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Josephine Cashman (Sydney Harbour Federation Trust), Catherine Hunter (KPMG) and Jason Timor (Supply Nation) discussed how only 1\/7th of the ‘close the gap’ targets for Indigenous Australians<\/a> is on track. And that the numbers are far worse for Indigenous Australians living in remote areas. It’s a disgrace and\u00a0something all Australians need to focus on. There are many chances to interact with indigenous businesses through Supply Nation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Traditional thinking:<\/strong> Australia\u2019s first people spent 50,000 years as custodians of this\u00a0land. Let\u2019s re-integrate traditional thinking to create resilient cities and put\u00a0reconciliation at the heart of these\u00a0cities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
