More and more companies, including leading Australian multinationals, are actively combatting climate change by committing to set science-based emission reduction targets. This is a powerful trend in a world of increasing greenhouse gas emissions and insufficient policies and incentives to keep global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

Sony, Nestl\u00e9, Walmart, Proctor &\u00a0Gamble, are among over 200 international companies who have committed to Science Based Targets as part of a global effort to keep temperatures well below the 2-degree threshold. \u00a0By using the broadly accepted Sectoral Decarbonization Approach, Science Based Targets allow companies to efficiently set ambitious, effective and credible emission reduction targets.<\/p>\n

Australian companies have joined the call to action and more than seven\u00a0corporate leaders have signed up to the Science Based Targets initiative, which was launched by CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF in 2015. In a partnership with Edge Environment, the Sydney based leading consulting firm specialised in measuring, understanding and managing environmental and social impacts, Ecofys is now supporting several companies in Australia to take and maintain their lead in climate action.<\/p>\n

The Sectoral Decarbonization Approach<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ecofys is the developer of the Sectoral Decarbonization Approach<\/a> (SDA), which is the leading methodology for setting science-based targets for your organisation.<\/p>\n

The SDA methodology is unique, since it looks at sector-specific decarbonization pathways that are compatible with the 2\u00b0C threshold rather than applying a generic approach for all companies regardless of the nature of their operations. This allows for more effective and credible target setting. The SDA has been used by the majority of companies who have committed to set science-based targets.<\/p>\n

Ecofys also leads the extension and refinement of the methodology for several sectors, like agriculture and forestry, freight transport, chemical and ICT sector and recently also for financial institutions.
