\"Craft<\/em><\/p>\n

Microbreweries are popping up across the country, with waste streams to match.\u00a0But an innovative new\u00a0project\u00a0is turning\u00a0this waste\u00a0into tasty dog treats \u2013 and making money along the way.<\/em><\/p>\n

The\u00a0waste source<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Journal of Cereal Science<\/a>,\u00a0spent grain is the major by-product of the brewing industry, representing\u00a0about 85% of all\u00a0by-products generated.<\/p>\n

So when\u00a0Edge Environment gave\u00a0local brewer 4Pines an EPA-funded Bin Trim assessment<\/a>\u00a0(to reduce their waste going to landfill), it\u00a0found the majority of 4Pines’\u00a0spent barley grain was being donated to pig and cattle farmers for stock feed.\u00a0However, 4Pines is\u00a0forecasting doubled production in the following 12 months, which will\u00a0over-supply local farmers and\u00a0mean extra spent grain will go to landfill.<\/p>\n

Turning waste\u00a0into revenue<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the spirit of innovation and with a desire to create new products from waste, Edge Environment\u2019s Bin Trim Assessor Gabi Stephen\u00a0saw a creative\u00a0way to divert brewer\u2019s grain from landfill\u00a0\u2013 she used the by-product to bake\u00a0a batch of healthy dog treats.<\/p>\n

Craft Beer Bones<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0recycled dog biscuits debuted at\u00a0an outdoor 4Pines pop-up bar\u00a0and\u00a0passing\u00a0dogs loved\u00a0them so much that\u00a0Gabi\u00a0decided to turn this waste stream into a revenue stream.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven after mashing barley, spent grain is filled with nutrients and is high in protein, fibre and minerals, so it\u2019s a great source of animal or human food and such a shame to see it go to waste.\u201d \u2013 Gabi\u00a0Stephen<\/em><\/p>\n

Craft Beer Bones are now being sampled daily at the 4Pines brewery in Brookvale and are available online at a variety of stockists<\/a>. We hope to one day stock the recycled dog treats at\u00a0all leading pet food retailers, including Pet Barn<\/a>.<\/p>\n
