Edge Environment\u2019s monthly \u2018Make More Good\u2019 donation sends $300 to a worthy cause nominated by a staff member. In July, 2019, Edge\u2019s Environmental Economist, Maisie Auld chose the Malala Fund<\/a> to be the recipient.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"This month, as with last year, my Make More Good donation on behalf of Edge will go to the Malala Fund. The Malala Fund<\/a> supports secondary education projects for girls around the world, aiming to secure 12 years of quality education for all and focusing its efforts in regions where girls are most likely to miss out on secondary education.<\/p>\n

A recent Malala Fund and World Bank Report found that secondary education, particularly in poor countries, has a multiplier effect improving both wealth and health. However, only three in four girls worldwide complete their secondary education. In poor countries, that proportion is reduced to one in every three girls. The report also quantified the loss of global wealth associated with a lack of secondary education for girls at between US$15 trillion and US$30 trillion.<\/p>\n

My support for this organization stems from my belief that everyone is entitled to a free, safe and quality education regardless of sex, location, upbringing or any other factors. Furthermore, there is a strong link between girls\u2019 education, family planning and improved social and environmental outcomes. Read my previous blog<\/a> to learn more about this link and the research behind it.<\/p>\n

To summarise, the most effective carbon reduction intervention is through girls\u2019 education and family planning. Yes, you read that correctly. The emission reductions from investment in family planning and girls\u2019 education could be close to 120 gigatons of carbon dioxide. This outweighs the reduction potential of other interventions such as wind turbines, solar farms, food waste management, electric vehicles and a myriad of other effective solutions.<\/p>\n
