8th ALCAS Conference “Pathways to Greening Global Markets”

The 8th ALCAS Conference was held from 16th-18th July 2013 in Manly and included over 80 presentations, including three international keynote speakers: Greg Thoma (The Sustainability Consortium – USA), Jodie Bricout (avniR LCA Platform – France) and Brian Lindsay (SAI Platform – UK).

This year’s conference, named “Pathways to Greening Global Markets”, had a strong focus on industry and how LCA is being used to drive innovation and sustainability by providing valuable environmental information that manufacturers use to guide product development, process improvements and supply chain management. The conference featured presentations from both academic and industry representatives on building materials, the agri-food sector, bio-fuels, eco-design, the benefits of using LCA, new LCA methods and approaches.

Julia Seddon (Inghams), Scott Clarkson (CSR Innovations) and Mark Tatam (Kingspan) presented on the LCA work they have undertaken with Edge Environment. They explained how the results are being used to differentiate their brands based on the good environmental performance of their products and also to drive manufacturing and supply chain efficiencies.

Edge Environment Director Jonas Bengtsson also participated in the conference, presenting on LCA of micro-algae biomass cultivation and bio-oil production, a research project to which he contributed and forms part of Scott Grierson’s (Aquatic Biomass Solutions) PhD research.
