As part of the Sustainable Sydney 2030 Strategic Plan, the city has a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70%. Addressing food waste is an important component of this target. Edge were engaged to model the environmental and financial impacts associated with a source-separated organics collection for residents. Edge analysed the environmental impacts of landfilling, composting and anaerobic digestion and made cost models for the provision of separated collection for food waste. The results demonstrated the environmental benefits of allowing food waste to be separated and recycled. Food waste from the municipal waste stream has now been implemented on an opt-in basis within the local government area.
