The City of Kingston engaged our team to develop an urban cooling strategy. The project commenced with detailed analysis of urban heat in the region and its relationship with different landscape features the distribution of vulnerable members of the community. They were defined using 5 data sets from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
This information was incorporated into a technical report, that was circulated within council to build capability and awareness of urban heat. The result was widespread engagement and interest in the issue from a range of key teams, including planning, assets, parks and sustainability.
The technical report informed an internal stakeholder workshop which was used to identify and conduct preliminary analysis of cooling options. Following the workshop, a draft Cooling Strategy has been developed which includes a vision, priority themes, actions and guidance on implementation and monitoring.
The project, which is yet to be completed with the draft currently out for consultation, demonstrates our ability to combine technical, engagement and planning inputs.
