I have primarily worked in infrastructure sustainability, supporting businesses and projects to develop sustainability strategies and deliver sustainability outcomes across a broad range of areas including resource reduction, sustainable procurement and waste minimisation.
My favourite projects are those where I get to work in partnership with organisations to facilitate continual improvement. Some that come to mind are:
City Rail Link: I led the as-built Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Rating on one of the largest infrastructure projects in New Zealand – Contract 1 of the City Rail Link project. I was initially involved from the client side and later became part of the contractor team, which provided me with valuable insights. My job was to work collaboratively across a multi-disciplined team to embed a culture focussed on sustainability and provide technical support to achieve sustainable outcomes.
Sustainability Strategy for the Women’s World Cup: A unique opportunity gave me the chance to bring two of my biggest passions together – sustainability and sport. Working in partnership with New Zealand Rugby, I facilitated a materiality workshop to identify key sustainability issues and opportunities, which formed the basis of a sustainability strategy for the 2020 Rugby World Cup. It was fantastic being able to work with a variety of stakeholders and identify initiatives that could use sport as a key mechanism to deliver sustainability outcomes, particularly focusing on supercharging gender diversity and promoting the indigenous culture of Aotearoa.
Young Professional Sustainability Governance Group: I love any opportunity to connect with others so it’s a no-brainer that I would enjoy bringing together a group of ambitious professionals with a passion for sustainability. The group’s purpose was to provide members with skills and knowledge to empower them to accelerate the change they wanted to see. It was an amazing opportunity to meet others from a variety of backgrounds and use our range of skills to influence the business together.
I studied a Bachelor of Engineering (hons) majoring in Product Development at Massey University. I never grew up thinking I wanted to be a sustainability professional, but from a young age, I have always been curious about how things can be done better than the last time. This concept of continuous improvement is a strong foundation for sustainability, which is why I love working in this industry.
In fact, my dream job was actually to design football boots. I have played football (soccer) since I was 5 and thoroughly enjoy spending my time on the pitch with a ball at my feet. Other than that, as a Kiwi who has recently moved to Melbourne, a lot of my spare time will be exploring all the beautiful spots that Australia has to offer.
