Agri-food Sustainability Specialist
I have primarily worked in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Energy and Water Efficiency, and Waste to Energy. My work has been mainly focused on the agri-food sector, including dairy, beef, wool, pork and poultry.
My favourite projects are those that challenge me to step out my comfort zone to explore new opportunities and establish new relationships. Some of the highlights are:
- Organisational LCA for Inghams Enterprise – This exciting project provides me the rare opportunity to engage with a world class poultry producer and broaden my expertise in the agri-food industry. I initiated the project and secured funding from Science Foundation Ireland. I am currently working on the project and we are committed to help Inghams demonstrate leadership in pursuing sustainable development
- LCA of wool production – In this project we analysed the environmental performance of Australian wool produced from three regions (high rainfall zone in New South Wales, wheat-sheep zone in Western Australia, and southern pastoral zone of central South Australia). I visited sheep farms in these regions and was impressed by how the farmers work with nature to produce wool while maintaining the rural landscape. It was my first project in Australia and I absolutely enjoyed it.
- Energy and water efficiency of Irish dairy processing – This project is aimed at bench-marking energy and water efficiency of some major Irish dairy processors and to analyse energy use, water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of common dairy products using life cycle assessment. I worked closely with site managers and engineers and obtained first hand data to reflect the most recent development of the industry. I enjoyed working with a variety of people in the project and navigating through complex data-sets from the companies. Providing knowledge and insights to industry always makes me very excited love nature and I am passionate about the sustainable development of our society. I truly believe that no matter how advanced future technology may become, people will still appreciate blue sky and clean ocean. and proud.
I completed BEng (hons) in Applied Chemistry at East University of Science and Technology in Shanghai, MSc in Ecology at Beijing Normal University, and PhD in Biosystems & Food Engineering at University College Dublin.
I love nature and I am passionate about the sustainable development of our society. I truly believe that no matter how advanced future technology may become, people will still appreciate blue sky and clean ocean.
In my spare time, I try to get close to nature through hiking, mountaineering, camping, kayaking and so on. I also love reading non-fiction books and watch independent movies. I am always curious about different ways of life and the diverse culture of countries.
