Position: Intern – Building Resilience Rating Tool Development

The Internship

This position is a part-time role to assist in the development of the Building Resilience Rating Tool (BRRT). The BRRT is an industry leading initiative which aims to provide information and guidance concerning the resilience of residential buildings.

The BRRT uses building material data to provide a rating of the resilience of a residential building. The rating provides various levels of detail from a ‘headline rating’ to resilience information by building element and weather hazard category. The tool is currently in pilot phase. The role described here will be pivotal in improving the tool and developing the second prototype as the project moves toward Beta-testing.

The project provides a unique opportunity to interact with a variety of stakeholders working in the built environment and sustainability industries. It also provides an opportunity to improve knowledge and contribute to the fast evolving climate change adaptation and resilience agendas.

Salary

The position is unpaid however Edge Environment will cover expenses incurred in attending our offices in Manly, NSW for the required periods.

Tasks

  • To contribute to the development of the Building Resilience Rating Tool
  • To assist in populating the Property Element Database which forms the basis for building material resilience ratings
  • To undertake research and assimilate quantitative information into prescribed formats
  • Undertake other tasks to develop and improve the BRRT as required

Qualifications and Skills:

Ideally, applicants should have a BSc in structural or civil engineering, or materials science and have good knowledge or experience in the following areas:

  • Structural engineering and building design. With focus on wind, fire, and roof engineering.
  • Materials science preferably with a focus on building materials including a strong understanding of the structural performance of building materials.
  • Climate change adaptation and resilience to natural weather hazards such as flood, cyclone, bushfire and storm.
  • Database design, development and management (excel experience required, web-based database knowledge preferred)
  • Technical research and reporting
