Make More Good 2019: Pink Up Parkes

Edge Environment’s monthly ‘Make More Good’ donation sends $300 to a worthy cause nominated by a staff member. In October, 2019, Edge’s Senior Consultant, Charlotte Wang, chose  the McGrath Foundation to be the recipient.

Over the last year, Edge has been managing all things sustainability for INLink Joint Venture (a BMD and Fulton Hogan joint venture), the construction contractor delivering the Parkes to Narromine section of the one-in-a-generation Inland Rail program.

The Inland Rail will consist of a high service freight rail line from Melbourne to Brisbane and in itself represents a sustainable infrastructure option as transporting goods by freight rail has a lower greenhouse gas impact compared to transportation via truck.

For the month of October, as you walk down the main street in Parkes, you can’t help but noticed the transformation in the shopfronts. The theme of the transformation is ‘pink’. This is the high street’s contribution to breast cancer awareness month, with each store transformed by pink garlands, confetti and even pink-coloured goods for sale.

My chosen charity for Edge’s monthly Make More Good donation is the McGrath Foundation for breast cancer awareness. The INLink Human Resources Manager, Adele Bintley, regularly organises charity and not-for-profit events for the INLink staff and their families. The events are a chance for the team to give back to the local community, and contributes to staff well-being. Adele managed to combine a range of interests and charities into a mega-event for breast cancer awareness month – Pink Up Parkes. This I’m glad that our donation helped fund this well-rounded event in Parkes that benefited both the project workforce and the local community.

The INLink team consists of mostly fly-in fly-out workers who only return home every 2 weeks. Throughout the project, they have developed a strong teamwork culture and every time I fly to Parkes I get to experience this first hand. It’s been a rewarding and memorable experience to work with such a dedicated team on embedding sustainability in the construction of the Inland Rail.
