Edge Environment’s monthly ‘Make More Good’ donation sends $300 to a worthy cause nominated by a staff member. In July, Edge’s Senior Sustainability Consultant Blake Lindley, chose Take3 to be the recipient.
A little like watching the news headlines, which will report the one train that crashes, but never the hundreds of thousands that don’t, working in the environmental sector can be a little overwhelming at times. You’ve probably heard it as well, plastic outnumbering fish in the ocean, new oil exploration licenses for the bight, record breaking anomalous weather, and the adaptation plans, mitigation programs and policy we design to co-ordinate a response.
Sometimes… it all feels a little out of your own hands.
I’m a firm believer in empowering people and individuals as a collective to make a difference, which is why this month I’m donating to Take3, a clean ocean initiative. Take3 is a movement a global community of likeminded people, and a forum for individuals to tangibly make some good every day. It urges you to ‘take 3 pieces of rubbish when you leave the beach, waterway or… anywhere’ and reduce environmental pollution.
It’s a ritual try to keep at our beloved Manly beach if I’ve swum, surfed, or ran, and one that’s even more important in the national parks and secluded beaches I visit along our coastline. Over the weekend, surfing on the central coast, I spent 1 minute before heading to the carpark to collect a bottle cap, a cigarette butt, and a few other plastic items from a 15m2 area. It must have been my lucky day – as I also stumbled across $5.
There should be no escape in anonymity and we all have the responsibility to look after our oceans, cities and waterways. Take some pride in your patch & Take 3!
