I\u2019ll be going to work this Australia day. Thanks to Edge\u2019s flexible working hours policy, I\u2019m allowed the freedom to take the public holiday on an alternative date and support a cause I believe in,\u00a0Moving the date of Australia Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not celebrating Australia day on January 26th<\/sup>\u00a0in order to raise awareness that moving the date is the right thing to do.\u00a0Moving the date will enable all Australians to celebrate together.<\/p>\n

Many Indigenous Australians currently remember the date, January 26th<\/sup> 1788, marking the arrival of Europeans in Australia as an Invasion day or Survival day.<\/p>\n

As University of Sydney,\u00a0Professor Jakelin Troy<\/a> put it “There are languages gone, people gone, there are cultural histories, knowledges that are gone as a result of 1788<\/em>.”\u00a0 Not much to celebrate.<\/p>\n

There is not much of a unified history to celebrate on that date either, It was not until 1935 that all Australian states and territories adopted use of the term “Australia Day<\/a>” to mark the date, and not until 1994<\/strong> that the date was consistently marked by a public holiday on that day by all states and territories. That\u2019s only 24 years ago.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the logical solution?<\/p>\n

Move the date <\/strong>and\u00a0we can all celebrate together.<\/p>\n
