Ecofys and Edge Environment team up to boost Science Based Targets\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>implementation in Australia<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

As a sustainability or strategy professional looking to develop a climate strategy, you are faced with a myriad of options to choose from.
\n<\/strong>
\nWhich methodology to apply? How can you tell if your target is ambitious enough in view of global climate goals and your industry? Science Based Targets let you do just that: translating the specific mitigation opportunities of your sector into an emissions reduction target in line with the 2\u00b0C goal. CDP, UN Global Compact, WRI and WWF launched the Science Based Targets initiative<\/strong> (www.sciencebasedtargets.org<\/a>) two years ago, and today over 200 companies<\/a> are developing such targets.<\/p>\n

Bringing the ground-breaking metric to the Australian shore, Edge Environment and\u00a0Ecofys<\/strong> have formed an alliance to support Australian companies in developing and implementing Science Based Targets.<\/p>\n

Rather than applying a generic approach for all companies regardless of the nature of their operations, Ecofys developed for the Science Based Targets initiative a new methodology to allow companies to allocate emissions from its activities based on sector specific profiles. Subsequently, emission reduction pathways per sector inform how much the companies\u2019 emissions need to be reduced. The method is based on the International Energy Agency\u2019s Energy Technology Perspectives<\/a> 2 Degrees Scenario and aims at keeping global warming well below 2\u00baC based on most economic abatement activities. The methodology provides companies with emission level targets for each year until 2050.<\/p>\n

Setting a target is a first step. \u201cWe also provide a method for assessing what a company needs to do to achieve the Science Based Targets level, and the most cost-effective way to achieve the targets.\u201d says Jonas Bengtsson CEO and co-founder of Edge Environment. \u201cWe assess the company\u2019s current abatement strategy and the emissions reduction level that is to be expected. If there is a gap, we advise on how it can be bridged to achieve science-based emission levels.\u201d<\/p>\n
