(According to research from the\u00a0Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a temperature increase of more than\u00a02\u00b0C would lead to serious consequences, such as a greater frequency of extreme climate events.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s\u00a0excellent news. I\u2019m excited about transitioning to a low-carbon or &#8220;green&#8221; economy in Australia, and all the new possibilities that will arise from this pledge. Post-COP21, <a href=\"http:\/\/sciencebasedtargets.org\/\">Science Based Targets<\/a> have been dominating emission reductions conversations. <a href=\"http:\/\/sciencebasedtargets.org\/companies-taking-action\/\">179 global companies committed<\/a> to Science Based Targets to help achieve the Paris pledge. Companies like Coca Cola, Dell, Sony, LG, Toyota, Westpac and Woolworths to name a few.<\/p>\n<p><u>But, what are <strong>Science Based Targets<\/strong>?<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Science Based Targets is a joint initiative by CDP, the UN Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF.<\/li>\n<li>Targets adopted by companies to reduce GHG emissions are considered \u201cscience-based\u201d if they are in line with the level of decarbonisation required to keep global temperature increase below 2\u00b0C compared to pre-industrial temperatures, as described in the Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). [Applies to the 4th or 5th AR of IPCC as well as modelling of the IEA.]<\/li>\n<li>Science Based Targets aims\u00a0to increase corporate ambition on climate action by changing the conversation on GHG emissions-reduction target-setting.<\/li>\n<li>The initiative also\u00a0aims to demonstrate the business case for ambitious target-setting and thereby enable companies to set targets.<\/li>\n<li>The Science Based Targets are reviewed and set by the Science Based Targets organisation and the applying company. They are determined by an individual company\u2019s:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2013 Boundary (scope 1 and 2 GHGs)<br \/>\n\u2013 Timeframe (min. 5 years, max. 15 years)<br \/>\n\u2013 Level of ambition (2\u00b0C target or 1.5\u00b0C target)<br \/>\n\u2013 Growth (predicted growth forecasts)<br \/>\n\u2013 Scope 3 emissions (timeframe commitment to include Scope 3 GHG emissions)<br \/>\n\u2013 Reporting (commitment to\u00a0annual GHG reporting)<br \/>\n\u2013 Recommendations (long-term goals e.g. 2050)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sciencebasedtargets.org\/faq\/\">Click here<\/a> for answers to common Science Based Targets FAQs.<\/p>\n<p><u>What does this mean for <strong>infrastructure and property projects?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p>It will become commonplace for clients, be they public or private, to have overarching science-based GHG emission-reduction targets. These targets will\u00a0apply\u00a0to infrastructure and property projects from\u00a0construction phases to operational phases of the asset. To ensure the Science Based Targets are met over the life of an asset, projects will need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus on the <em>life cycle performance<\/em> early in design. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That means no longer\u00a0making decisions based only on construction capital costs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Focus on <em>material selections<\/em> as they are locked in for the asset life. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That means no longer\u00a0ignoring the overall\u00a0impact of materials selected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Focus on<em> operational energy and operational emission reductions<\/em> early in design. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That means removing the divide between the designers and operators.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tools that can help meet these project needs include <a href=\"http:\/\/edgeenvironment.com\/services\/life-cycle-assessment-services\/\"><strong>Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)<\/strong><\/a>, which will help to accurately predict GHG emissions for an asset\u2019s life, but can be completed early in the design stage. LCA coupled with <a href=\"http:\/\/edgeenvironment.com\/services\/strategy-supply-chain-management\/whole-of-life-triple-bottom-line\/\"><strong>Life Cycle Costing (LCC)<\/strong><\/a>, will identify which GHG emission-saving initiatives will also have a financial benefit or cost to the project and will help drive smart business decisions for projects.<\/p>\n<p><u>Where to from here?<\/u><\/p>\n<p>By 2050 I envision all infrastructure projects operating as net zero carbon assets, as they will need to contribute to a zero carbon economy as a whole. This will mean significant growth in Australia for renewable energy supply for electricity dependent services and an increase in electric\/battery vehicles and vehicles fuelled via biofuels. I believe all infrastructure projects need to include or source off-site renewable energy where possible, cleaning up Australia\u2019s grid electricity and reducing our dependency on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.isca.org.au\/\">ISCA <\/a>is clearly prioritising and focusing on carbon \u2013 that is a good step forward.
