A start-up foundation\u2019s massive campaign to rid the oceans of plastic pollution is a step closer to reality after it signed an agreement with a Japanese island city to pilot its innovative method of collecting plastic. \u00a0The program has been\u00a0been dubbed the world\u2019s largest ocean cleanup in history and is set to deploy by mid-2016.\"Sliderimage_overview\"<\/p>\n

The Ocean Cleanup,<\/span><\/u><\/a> founded by a 20-year-old Dutch aerospace engineering student, will make use of floating booms to collect plastic waste in the ocean.\u00a0The method capitalises on the natural flow of the ocean\u2019s rotating currents called gyres which passively concentrate plastics in one\u00a0location reducing the use of materials and fuel in collection of the waste.<\/p>\n

The project is still in development although initial pilots and field trials have been delivering excellent initial results.<\/p>\n
